The Fijian Media Association (FMA) has expressed its interest to Government, for a piece of land to set up a journalism institute and Press Club.

FMA general secretary and FijiNikua magazine editor Stanley Simpson made this known at the launch of the bi-monthly magazine on Christmas eve.

“For 16 years, our media landscape was constrained,” Mr Simpson said.

“I want to thank the Prime Minister and the Coalition Government for their leadership in repealing the Media Industry Development Authority Act 2010 and providing the conditions for a free media landscape that will enrich and reignite our democracy and democratic discourse.

“The country cannot let this moment pass so we leave a strong legacy of free spirit and free speech for future generations.”

Plans for a journalism institute and Press Club are part of the Association’s 5-year strategic plan.

Other key stakeholders have also expressed interest to support the move.

“It would be a place that establishes and symbolises the media’s long contribution to this country.”
