A Fijian studying in Hawaii, has detailed his experience of the Hawaii storm that ravaged through the island state of the US this week.

Errol Qaqa is one of some 50 Fijian students studying at Brigham Young University in Laie. He is studying International Tourism and Hospitality and is a national rep who competes in the hurdles track event.

Yesterday, Fiji Sun reached out to Mr Qaqa. The storm, known as Kona Low, affected their power supply and their university gym was used as an evacuation centre, he said.

“It was serious strong winds and power outages around the Laie and Kahuku communities,” he said.

“The BYU Hawaii gymnasium was a shelter (evacuation centre) to the neighbouring communities who were close to the coastline. They were also affected by strong winds and power outages.

“This morning (yesterday) on my way to my 7am class, the evacuees were ready to go back to their homes.

“All the Fijian students here are safe and we are all staying in our campus. The school is back to normal,” he added.

According to AccuWweather.com, one person died after the storm swept through the island state bringing with it strong winds, rain and life-threatening surf reaching to 60-feet in height.
