Fijians can expect more educational opportunities, cultural exchanges and hopefully direct flights from Fiji to China and vice-versa as the two countries celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations.
Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, said the nations’ enduring friendship is rooted in people-to-people ties.
“Amity between the people holds the key to sound state-to-state relations,” he said, adding that China will continue sending medical teams, arranging cultural and art troupes, and expanding Chinese Government Scholarships for Fijian students.

Over the past 50 years, bilateral trade has jumped from $2.3 million to $534 million, while China-aided bridges, sports arenas, and civic centers have reshaped Fiji’s cities and enhanced major events like the Pacific Games.
"Visa exemptions, sister-city partnerships, Chinese medical teams, and cultural exchanges have strengthened mutual understanding. Over 300 Fijian students have benefitted from Chinese Government Scholarships, while growing Chinese tourism continues to highlight Fiji’s scenic beauty and rich culture."
Ambassador Zhou also emphasized the partnership’s role in global governance, climate action, and international peacekeeping. Initiatives like the Global Governance Initiative and Fiji’s “Ocean of Peace” showcase the nations’ shared commitment to sovereignty, justice, and global stability.
“Fiji, this shining pearl of the South Pacific, captivates the world not only with its breathtaking scenery but also with the spirit of rugby that defines its national character,” Ambassador Zhou said. With scholarships, direct flights, and cultural exchanges leading the way, the next chapter of Fiji-China relations promises deeper connections between people, economies, and ideas.
