“Culture is one of the most treasured parts of our identity,” Mr Navakamocea said. “For generations, art and culture have helped ordinary Fijians earn a living, send their children to school, and support their families,” he said.
More than 40 craft makers from the four divisions are taking part this year are showcasing masi, mats, kuta weaving, jewellery, textiles, tie-dye and patchwork among many other crafts. The exhibition has been held every year since 1983. It celebrates Fiji’s traditional skills and encourages artists to use natural materials found in their communities.
“The event helps support women, single mothers, and youths by giving them a chance to earn money and share their creative ideas,” he said. “Being economically empowered gives women the confidence to make their own decisions.”
All entries will be judged on quality and technique. The traditional category must use 100 per cent local materials, while the contemporary category allows the inclusion of imported items. The revival of the Fiji Craft Society will give artisans a stronger voice and better support.
Mr Vakamocea added that next year, Fiji will host the Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival 2026, an event returning after 20 years.
