In this year alone, Film Fiji has hosted five major productions which employed around 690 locals generating economic activity of up to $110.25 million.

Minister for Tourism, Faiyaz Koya said 55 small productions had also been filmed on Fiji’s shores, generating employment for around 99 locals and generating new economic activity of around $4.6 million.

Mr Koya said during the coronavirus pandemic and with the gradual opening of the borders in 2021, Fiji facilitated the famous reality TV show “Survivor”(US) for seasons 41 and 42, through the facilitation of the COVID-19 Risk Mitigation Task Force (CRMT).

He said this generated employment to 408 locals and created around $70 million worth of new economic activity.

“Additionally, film and TV productions have also contributed towards the surrounding communities as a gesture of goodwill and commitment to the development of Fiji."

“These donations ranged from school items, books desks, household care packs, medical equipment, generators, donations in cash to women’s funds and education funds, to name a few.”

“The Film Fiji talent database provides a list of talent and skills that Fiji has to offer and are engaged by the production companies,” he said.

“Local vendors are engaged to supply products and services to the productions. These include hotel accommodation, land, air and sea transportation.

“Also, catering, hardware and building materials, equipment hire, financial, insurance and professional services.”

“In addition, the benefits are not limited to just employment and businesses but include payment of location fees to landowners where the production is located,” he said.

Most productions have been undertaken in maritime zones and smaller townships which have benefitted those that live there.
