Government is working on finalising regulations for the recent Land Transport Amendment Bill 2025, which includes penalties for drivers with provisional licence.

This was revealed by the Minister for Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau yesterday.

In response to questions from this masthead about the specific details for provisional drivers’ fines, Ro Filipe said: “There was an amendment at the last Parliament regarding the provisional licence.

“We are working on the regulations now to bring them into effect.”

The amendment, passed on March 13, introduced stricter penalties for provisional licence holders.

This included a three-month penalty for any traffic infringement and potential licence cancellation after three offences.

Between 2022 and 2024, nearly 37,000 drivers with provisional licence were issued traffic infringements notices. This has increased by 150 per cent since 2023.

In 2024, about 20 per cent of road fatalities were linked to speeding and careless driving by provisional licence holders.
