National Fire Authority (NFA) chief executive officer Puamau Sowane has renewed calls for homeowners to take precautionary measures to reduce the risk of residential fires.
His appeal follows a rise in fire incidents involving unattended homes.
Two major residential fires were reported over the weekend.

On Saturday, fire crews from Suva, Nasinu and Valelevu responded to a blaze in Delaitokatoka, Valelevu, where a family home was engulfed in flames.
After more than two hours of firefighting, the four-bedroom timber-and-corrugated iron house sustained about 90 per cent damage, with losses estimated at $30,000.
On Sunday, another fire destroyed an uninsured home in Lausa, Tavua, leaving a family of three homeless.
The NFA said the family was attending a function when the fire broke out.
While the causes of both fires remain under investigation, Mr Sowane urged homeowners to take responsibility for reducing fire risks before leaving their properties.
“In recent months, we have observed a concerning trend where several residential fires have occurred while occupants were away from their properties,” he said.
“Sadly, families often return to find that everything they have worked for has been reduced to ashes.”
Mr Sowane said homeowners should always take a few minutes to carry out basic safety checks before leaving home.
“Ensure electrical appliances not in use are switched off, electrical cords are in good condition and potential fire hazards are removed,” he said.
“Simple checks can help prevent a devastating fire.
“A fire can occur unexpectedly and spread rapidly, causing significant emotional and financial hardship.”
Mr Sowane also encouraged homeowners to insure their properties to protect themselves against unexpected losses.
