Fire Destroys Cuvu Shopping Complex

A double-storey building at Naidovi, Cuvu, Nadroga, located outside the Sigatoka Fire Boundary, was destroyed yesterday morning.
National Fire Authority chief executive officer Puamau Sowani confirmed the incident.
He said the Sigatoka Fire Station received a call at around 2.30am.

"Upon arrival, the fire brigade noticed the double-storey building was on fire.
The brigade immediately worked to prevent the fire from spreading and managed to control it.
“The team continued working on the hotspots and successfully extinguised the fire. The Korolevu team assisted during the incident,” he said.
The building belonged to Hari Shankar, 69, who was sleeping with his wife in their three-bedroom apartment. They were awakened by their son-in-law, Rohit Chand, 42.
The building housed a shopping complex and four small shops on the ground floor, including a kava shop, while the top floor contained a nightclub and the owner’s apartment.
“There was 100 per cent damage to the top floor. The estimated cost of the damage is $750,000,” Mr Sowani said.
He added that a fire investigation would be conducted to determine the suspected cause of the fire.
“We continue to urge members of the public to be vigilant in keeping their homes fire-safe," Mr Sowani said.
