The National Fire Authority (NFA), has ruled the Veiquwawa settlement in Raiwaqa on Sunday as arson.

The Viquwawa Settlement fire was reported around 2.42pm when a corrugated iron house was engulfed in flames.

According to their on-site investigation, the fire was caused by an earlier dispute between the couple who had five children all living in the same house.

“The father evacuated all the children outside and tried to rescue his wife, but the heat and fire were too much, which almost cost his life,” NFA stated.

NFA’s chief executive officer, Puamau Sowane has urged families to handle disputes delicately and amicably so as to avoid such problems.

“We are urging the public to resolve their disputes in an amicable manner and not resort to actions where families lose all their belongings, which is then compounded by a death from a fire,” Mr Sowane said.

“We have had similar instances this year and previously when family members resorted to such actions, we are calling on members of the public to refrain from such actions.

“I urge members of the public to contact us as soon as possible to give our crew a fighting chance to save lives and properties.”
