Visitors at Vadravadra village in Gau stood amazed as villagers participated in the annual yavirau or traditional fish drive.

The Naveivarati clan led the drive.

Mataqali Naveivarati leader, Leatasi Waqasaqa said the first fish drive took place on Christmas eve and a second one on Monday - in preparation for new year celebrations.

The first yavirau took place at the mataqali fishing grounds.  A taboo was placed on the fishing grounds for over a year.

"This was part of our preparation for relatives visiting from Suva, Nadi and Bua.

"They were all surprised at the amount of fish that were caught."
