A fish seller by the roadside in Ba has encouraged students to take education seriously because life can be challenging.

Imraz Rahman from Varavu has been buying and selling fish for over 15 years and says while some days are good, many are tough especially when you are the sole breadwinner of the family.

“I buy fish from Ba, Tavua, and at times from Lautoka fishermen and I sell along the road where my house is,” he said.

“My wife does domestic duties at home, while the day to day expenses depends on me.”

Some days he says he makes no sale and has to take the fish back home.

“There are days when I can only make $15 or $30 the most in what I call dry season in business.”

During the Diwali season he struggles to make ends meet, but in the Christmas season, that’s when he says he is the happiest fish seller on the roadside.

He says he often encourages his son to be diligent in school.

“Since I know the struggle I always tell my son to study hard and make a better living.”

His son wants to be a doctor. He is a Year 11 pure science student at Khalsa College and is excelling according to Mr Rahman.

“I am happy that so far I have been able to support my son and wife through my fish selling job, but I alone know the struggle I go through.

“But it is what I have chosen to do.”

He thanked the Government for the free education scheme which has really eased his financial burden.

Mr Rahman hopes to have a better stall for his business so that he can attract more customers.
