A 34-year-old fisher of Sonaisali, in Nadi, was caught by surprise when an ordinary fishing expedition turned extraordinary with what was to be the biggest catch of his life.

Dineshwar Reddy, with the help of those on board his boat, caught a whopping 200-kg kawakawa or grouper fish at the Sonaisali River on Monday.

The fish stood taller than Mr Reddy’s height of 5-feet-6-inches.

Mr Reddy could not believe what he saw when he recounted the big moment.

“The last time we caught a big fish was a few years back, but this was the biggest catch I have come across,” he said.

He said it took five men to uplift the fish onto the trailer.

“We were doing net fishing and when we pulled the nets this big fish came towards the net and started eating the fish,” Mr Reddy said.

“During this exercise we used the big line, big hook and bait and let it drag at the end of the boat.

Mr Reddy said he has a few middleman who have shown interest in buying the big fish.
