The National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) is urging residents in low-lying areas across the Central Division to take extreme caution, as heavy localised rainfall has triggered flash flooding in several locations.

In a public advisory issued today, NDRMO warned against attempting to walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters, saying it could be deadly.

“We strongly advise the public to STAY AWAY and REFRAIN from attempting to walk, swim or drive through flooded roads, walkways, drains or crossings. Floodwaters can be fast-moving, unpredictable and dangerous,” the advisory stated.

The NDRMO also raised concerns over potential landslides, with continuous rainfall over the past few days leaving the ground heavily saturated.

“There are possible risks of landslides occurring in some areas,” the advisory added.

Motorists are being asked to avoid unnecessary travel and drive cautiously, especially in urban areas where poor drainage and reduced visibility are increasing the risk of surface flooding.

For assistance or evacuation support, residents are encouraged to contact the Fiji Police Force or the National Fire Authority (NFA).

Evacuation centre details can be found on the NDMO website at www.ndmo.gov.fj.

“We urge all Fijians to prioritise safety, take necessary precautions, and support vulnerable community members,” NDRMO stated.

The agency, in coordination with the Fiji Meteorological Service, will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
