The Fiji National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) has placed the public on high alert after a Flash Flood Warning was issued today for the eastern half of Viti Levu.

The warning covers the Serua–Namosi corridor through Navua, Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri and parts of Ra.

A Flash Flood Alert is also in effect for the Northern Division, with forecasters warning that conditions may rapidly worsen as persistent heavy rain continues throughout the day.

NDRMO is urging the public to stay updated through official weather channels and avoid crossing flooded roads, crossings or walkways, as water levels can rise swiftly and pose life-threatening risks. Parents and guardians are reminded to closely monitor children and keep them away from drains, rivers and flooded areas.

Those living in flood-prone or low-lying communities are advised to move belongings to higher ground, prepare essential items in case evacuation is needed, and ensure emergency kits are ready and accessible.

The public can contact the Fiji Police Force or National Fire Authority (NFA) for assistance in moving to safety. Information on designated evacuation centres is available on the NDRMO website - www.ndmo.gov.fj

Drivers are advised to travel only when necessary and to exercise extreme caution, especially at night when visibility is low. Authorities warn that landslides are also possible due to saturated soil from continuous rainfall.

NDRMO is encouraging communities to check on the elderly, persons with disabilities and neighbours who may need help during this period.

The office says it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as conditions evolve, urging the public to remain vigilant and stay safe.
