Flooding Prevents Kids From Attending School

Labasa students in low lying areas could not attend school yesterday because of flooding.
Emali Volitikoro, the mother of Adi Laisani Motea Tagicaki and Adi Cinakoro Sevusevutabua, said her daughters returned home because the river was flooded.
Ms Volitikoro said it was unusual for a few hours of rain to flood the river.

She said this was definitely the effects of climate change because before, the river would only be flooded after weeks of heavy rainfall.
“School has just started after a good eight months, but this is something we can’t control; that is the weather,” Ms Volitiukoro said.
“A lot of things can happen and also sickness can spread from this kind of weather.
“We as parents have to make the right decisions for our children to keep them safe in all levels, from COVID-19, and from drowning as a result of natural disasters.”
