A mother’s place is much more than the kitchen, says Fiji National University (FNU) staff Sebiuta Utoni.

During the Macuata District Day at Naduri Village, Labasa, the FNU placed a booth where women from 13 villages could reach out for advice on education programme they could pursue.

Ms Utoni said there were many young mothers who had completed Year 12 and 13, but for some reasons sacrificed the need to have tertiary qualification.

“FNU offers different programmes to accommodate individuals from different background and locations and all they have to do to consult with us,” Ms Utoni said.

“Programmes like certificate in age care, housekeeping, early childhood education, cookery and even short courses.”

Former divisional education officer northern Selemo Drokamaisau encouraged mothers at the booth not to underestimate themselves.

“Many mothers had managed to juggle with their studies and housework and graduated from FNU with flying colours,” Mr Drokamaisau said.

“Women must invest in themselves which also includes upgrading their education qualification for a better future.”

The Macuata District Day ended on Friday.
