Over a hundred former graduates of the Fiji National University (FNU) filled the conference room of the Hotel Menen in the Republic Nauru.

FNU held its inaugural regional Alumni Networking and Talanoa event at the Republic of Nauru on July 26, 2023.

The inaugural Alumni event was attended by FNU’s Acting Vice- Chancellor, Professor Nabobo-Baba, FNU Chief Financial Officer, Nilesh Prasad, FNU Alumni Relations Consultant, Fota Aisea, Republic of Nauru Ministry delegates, Division of Multicultural Affairs (DMA), and graduates of the FNU alumni and their families.

An attendee at the event and FNU alumnus, Monica Katonivualiku saw the first regional Alumni networking session as a fruitful beginning in Nauru.

The 35-year-old, employed as a Public Health Nurse at the Republic of Nauru Hospital, said she felt so proud to see FNU in the country.

“I am so happy as a former FNU student to see Team FNU here in Nauru, and having the Acting Vice-Chancellor come to Nauru in person, is truly a blessing and an honour!”

“Ever since Professor Nabobo-Baba set foot on the island; it has been fruitful – we now see the many opportunities that are available for us and the community in Nauru.”

“I wish Nauru, and the future students of Nauru who will be joining FNU, all the best in their journey.”

Katonivualiku graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing from the FNU’s, College of Medicine, Nursing Health, and Sciences (CMNHS) in 2013.

“I have just registered as an Alumni! I am glad to be part of this network,” Katonivualiku said.

“I have been living in Nauru since 2021, and for me, the Alumni Talanoa Networking event was a fruitful one, and I see it as a start and a beginning of many new things.”

“This is also an eye-opener for the nation of Nauru, and I hope and wish for more events from FNU to happen in Nauru.”

“Seeing the space filled with graduates of FNU showed how successful the first regional Alumni event was,” Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba said.

“As the Acting Vice-Chancellor of FNU, I wanted to say thank you to the Division of Multicultural Affairs (DMA) Republic of Nauru Secretary, Daniel Eoe, a big thank you for accepting our invite as the Chief Guest to this inaugural event, and for ensuring that the team from FNU was made at home on the island.”

“To all the alumni, you are all our family, and without your presence at this event, this would not have been possible.”

“Alumni engagement goes beyond simply staying connected with former students. It involves creating avenues for alumni to actively contribute their skills, knowledge, and experiences as leaders within the university community.”
