The Fiji National University (FNU) will conduct an internal workshop on leadership development for women in higher education as part of celebrations to mark International Women’s Day.

This workshop is being funded by the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).

The one-day workshop which will be held today, at De Vos on the Park in Suva City, has attracted a strong pool of women from across the University.

FNU College of Humanities and Education (CHE) Associate Dean Research and workshop co-ordinator Zakia Ali Chand said the workshop consists of 30 participants who are FNU academics, lecturers and middle-managers.

The workshop is made possible through the ACU’s grant that was announced by the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle during her visit to Fiji in October last year.

“The aim is to empower women academics to progress to more senior levels as managers and researchers to achieve gender equality and equality of career opportunity,” Ali- Chand said.

“Key topics to be covered at the workshop include women’s participation in higher education (HE) institutions and its importance, understanding the wider issues in HE, skills women need to operate effectively within a higher education institution and mentoring and networking to further their career as university women.”

“Presenters at the workshop will include a representative from the Government, FNU Vice Chancellor Professor Nigel Healey and FNU Pro Vice Chancellor Research Professor Mohini Singh.”

“There will also be a presentation on men’s perspectives of challenges in career progression.”

Ali-Chand said a seminar is also being organised on Friday, 8 March at Nasinu Campus to commemorate International Women’s Day.

Panelists will include representatives from civil society organisations (CSO) and FNU.
