A Fijian volunteer with the proposed Fijians First Party has urged Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry to “focus on his own political journey” instead of attempting to undermine new political voices.

Ratu Sailosi Sirisirivalu responded to Mr Chaudhry’s recent criticism, saying his comments were “disappointing and unwarranted.

“We respectfully suggest that Mr Chaudhry focus on his own political journey and allow others to contest on their own merit.

“Elections should be won through ideas and public trust, not by seeking to disqualify competitors through backdoor tactics,” Ratu Sireli said.

The proposed Fijians First Party described itself as a collective of “young, aspiring leaders committed to participating in national politics guided by the principles of equality, meritocracy, and a shared vision for a better Fiji.”

Ratu Sireli clarified that the former FijiFirst party leadership is not affiliated with the group.

“It is disheartening to see a senior political figure attempt to undermine the democratic rights of young Fijians, who wish to contribute to the future of their country. Such comments appear to be a deliberate attempt to influence authorities and deny others a fair opportunity to serve.”

The response came after Mr Chaudhry publicly objected to the proposed party’s registration, claiming its name was too similar to the deregistered FijiFirst party and could mislead voters.

“The individuals behind the new party were the same people responsible for the deregistration of the original FijiFirst party,” Mr Chaudhry said.

“It’s too similar to the FijiFirst name, and these people couldn’t even run a party properly before. How can they be trusted to run the country?”

Mr Chaudhry also said those involved should not be allowed to “confuse the voters again,” calling for the authorities to reject the application.

Despite the criticism, the Proposed Fijians First Party said it remained committed to upholding democratic values and encouraging greater youth participation in shaping the nation’s future.
