Lautaini Lewarara Foiakau defied all odds to achieve her goal.

Yesterday, the mother of five and a grandmother to two children graduated with the Bachelor of Education in primary.

She was awarded with the Leadership Award in Education during the graduation at the Fulton Adventist University College at Sabeto in Nadi.

The 45-year-old from Nadala, Nadarivatu, said going back to study at her age was a challenge.

“I faced negative comments that I am old and I won’t be able to study again because I am a grandmother. Mostly in our society people think education is just limited to a certain age,” she said.

“It was not easy for me to hear those comments and people making a joke about it.

“Those negative comments pushed me forward because I know that I have a calling from God. “

Another challenge she faced was dropping out of school and for 20 years, she spent her life at home being a mother and a housewife.

“I had spend the rest of my years at home I know it doesn’t limit the call of God in my life and the future ahead of me,” Ms Foiakau said.

She is thankful for a supportive husband for encouraging her to study and get a degree.

“I wish my husband who now works as a crane operator in New Zealand was here to witness this achievement,” Ms Foiakau said.

“Being a mother I had to balance my time at home and my studies, but I am thankful to my parents and daughters for helping with what needs to be done at home.”

On the bright side she hopes her achievement is an encouragement to other women her age.

“Or those who are over 45 there is no limit to what you can achieve in life,” she said.

“With God, nothing is impossible.”
