Force Loses Sergeant, Family Loses Dad
Sergeant Raj Gopal Chetty dies after the boat he and others were in capsized. Family say he was a 30-year veteran in the Fiji Police Force.

A family is grieving after the loss of their father, Police Sergeant Raj Gopal Chetty, who died after the boat, he and three others were in, capsized near Toberua Island on Saturday night.
His daughter, Shivani Chetty, 25 received the call from the Nausori Police Station about her father’s death yesterday morning.
Ms Chetty said that his father served the Fiji Police Force close to 30 years.

“He was known for kindness and jolly mood. He loved to connect with people during the time he would go out during Police Community Work or during the Drug Awareness Programme,” he said.
“He was loved by everyone because of the numerous community works he continued to do.
“My father did not know how to swim, and every time we would ask him about it, he said he was not afraid to die. If it was my time, he said he would go.”
Mr Chetty’s colleagues were at their home yesterday to set up the tents as they prepare for the late Mr Chetty’s funeral later this week.
A Police report yesterday said the late Mr Chetty had gone out fishing with three others when they encountered bad weather and their boat capsized near Toberua Island.

“The three were rescued by another fisherman while his body had disappeared (at the time),” the report said.
His body was recovered and a post mortem examination will be conducted.
Police are continuing their investigation.
