Asenaca Kalou, a mother of seven, children decided to come to Suva and stay with a relative in order to study baking and pastry courses at the Makoi Women Vocational Training Centre.

Her sacrifice paid off when she was among 50 students who graduated yesterday.

Ms Kalou came to know about the centre through Facebook.

“My family was financially struggling and I decided to study. I was unemployed and was financially drained,” Ms Kalou said.

“I can say that I was rescued by the centre and for that I am forever grateful. The knowledge I have received here will someday help me open a business in order to better our livelihood.

“The centre has given me hope and to believe that there are still good Samaritans around.

“I studied until Form Three and to be given an opportunity to study which was free of cost was a blessing in disguise.”

She said leaving Nadi to come to Suva was hard, but she believed that it was for a good reason.

“Walking up the stage to receive my certificate was an emotional moment for me and I could not stop the tears,” Ms Kalou said.

“To finally see my name on a certificate is a feeling that cannot be described and I am thankful for the opportunity given to me.

“Thank you to everyone who has helped me reach this far in life.” Edited by Jonathan Bryce
