The former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has the right to seek legal recourse if he thinks his rights as an accused person were violated.

This was a response by Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua to a statement made by FijiFirst Member of Parliament Viliame Naupoto earlier this week.

Mr Naupoto had said the Fiji Police Force under the Coalition Government breached the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT) in the case of Mr Sayed-Khaiyum.

Mr Naupoto said that the Coalition Government was using illegal and inhumane tactics to degrade, shame, torture, and persecute their political opponents, and these have been banned via UNCAT.

He also said Mr Sayed-Khaiyum was unnecessarily paraded around in handcuffs.
