His last posting was with Fiji Sun’s newly-revamped vernacular section, Siga Rarama, before he retired last year.
Fiji Sun managing editor sports Leone Cabenatabua worked with Mr Bolatiki for more than 20 years.
He said Mr Bolatiki was promoted as the chief of staff and later as the political editor during Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase’s Government.
“During that time, Russell Hunter was the publisher and Maika was given the responsibility to fill page seven daily on political news,” Mr Cabenatabua said.
“That column was one of the most read by people.”
As his journey continued, he went on to manage the company’s first iTaukei newspaper ‘Sigavou’.
Before his journalism career, Mr Bolatiki worked as a teacher and gained popularity while representing Fiji Rugby Union Minor Unions as a rugby player in the 1980s.
A qualified strength and condition coach, Mr Bolatiki was known as a father figure.
“He was a person who brought everyone together in the newsroom or anywhere he went,” Mr Cabenatabua said.
“People knew him by nature and everyone that was groomed by him has moved on to holding public relations (PR) positions both locally and overseas.
“During our last conversation, he told me ‘Don’t worry, I am getting there’,” he added.
“We will surely miss him; Rest in peace, my friend.”
Family
Mr Bolatiki’s daughter, Makerata, described him as a humble father who always work extra mile to provide for his family and give respect to everyone, regardless of different backgrounds.
“We used to have discussions over kava sessions, and he never talked about his work or other people,” Ms Makerata said.
“Instead, he would teach and guide us how to live a life of kindness and service to others.”
She said some people, who feared him, later found out it was because of his physical appearance.
“If anyone knew his personality, he was fearless and kind like a dove,” she said.
She said the family would gather soon to discuss about the funeral arrangement.
Mr Bolatiki is survived by his wife, two daughters, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
