FRA, Suva City Council, Environment Department Work To Remove Rotten Trees

The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) will be working with the Suva City Coun­cil and the Department of Environ­ment to trim trees and remove rotten trees around Suva.

The authority’s acting chief executive of­ficer Kamal Prasad said cutting and remov­ing trees required proper procedures to be followed.

“One of the things we have to do is make appropriate applications with the Depart­ment of Environment, which would then tell us the most sustainable path to follow,” Mr Prasad said.

“We know that the cyclone season is upon us and people are concerned following the accident in Suva where a tree fell.

“We are working with the Suva City Coun­cil. We will share the work, but that is after the application has been made and approv­als granted.”

Mr Prasad said it was important that the impact to the environment was taken into consideration before any steps that would require removal of trees.

On Wednesday, a raintree planted on the road reserve fell after its roots became rot­ten. The tree fell on a passing vehicle. Peo­ple inside the vehicle escaped serious inju­ries. People living along Holland Street and Toorak said the trees over the years have posed a danger because branches had fallen on the roads and on cars.
