For the past five years, Nathan Narayan, 19, and Pranesh Kumar, 19, planned on heading towards the same career path.

In 2017, the then Swami Vivekananda College (SVC) students decided to study aircraft engineering at the Fiji National University (FNU) Namaka Campus in Nadi after completing their final year at SVC.

But there was a catch. To secure a spot in aircraft engineering, only 16 applicants would be successful.

This required an A Grade mark in both the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination (FY12CE) and the Fiji Year 13 Certificate Examination (FY13CE).

“We both passed with good marks and we were able to make it through the aviation centre and we are looking forward to succeeding together,” Kumar said.

“To get our marks to standard, we really had to work hard because they needed 280 plus in the FY12CE and the FY13CE.”

Mr Kumar said he had a dream of being in flying school.

“In 2014, I was into flying but due to some financial conditions I had a change of mind of pursuing my dream in aircraft engineering since it related to aircraft and maybe later if things go as expected, then I will switch to flying,” he said.

Mr Narayan said it had also been the dream of his parents for him to be part of the aircraft engineering team.

“My parents are looking forward for me to pursue my dreams,” he said.

“This has been their dream and also mine to study aircraft engineering.”

The two friends are looking forward to succeeding and working together in the future.

Friends want to succeed together

Meanwhile, Namrata Nand, 18, Prajeeta Naidu, 19 and Manav Kumar, 18 were amongst the hundreds that turned up to be part of the Fiji National University (FNU) orientation day at the Namaka Campus in Nadi yesterday.

Mr Nand said she chose FNU because she was confident that the university would secure her with a decent job once she graduates.

“I chose to come and study in FNU because my courses are here and IknowthatIcangetagoodjobby studying in FNU,” she said.

“My programme for this year is Bachelor of Hospitality and Hotel Management and I look forward to doing my studies here.”

Mr Naidu said choosing FNU was all part of her choice for being involved in the tourism sector.

“The courses here are relevant to me and I also want to join the hotel sector,” she said.

“As friends, we have an aim to become successful and graduate together later on in the future.”

Mr Kumar said he was looking forward to how the feel of tertiary level would be like.
