From Nurse to Corrections Officer, Tuibabasiga Scoops Top Awards

 Registered nurse, Joshua Tuibabasiga, topped the Fiji Corrections Service Commissioning of Officers Cadet passing-out parade in Naboro yesterday.

Among the 72 recruits, Mr Tuibabasiga scooped three top awards- the Commissioner Award and Best Academic Award. He also received the Commissioner Award and Best Baton Award.

Mr Tuibabasiga, who was previously employed as a registered nurse, sets the bar high in entering the Fiji Corrections Service to provide services to inmates behind bars.

The 28-year-old who hails from Vatukuca, Vaturova, in Cakaudrove said joining the force was always a desire when asked why he changed jobs.

According to Mr Tuibabasiga, he was keen to join the force after receiving a call to duty as a nurse in the corrections service in 2018, following his graduation.

“When I started serving in the corrections service, I knew there was a lot of work needed to be done in terms of providing healthcare,” Mr Tuibabasiga said.

“But I’m glad I’m able to be part of the recruit among my peers; they have taught me a lot in terms of patience and hard work.” 

Mr Tuibabasiga said the 13 weeks of intense training were an eye-opener for him, even though it was a tough one.

“We are tasked with maintaining discipline, promoting rehabilitation, and safeguarding the rights and dignity of those under your care,” he said.

“We are taught that our responsibilities extend to contributing to the overall safety and security of the community by overseeing the rehabilitation process and aiding in the reduction of recidivism.”
