FTU honours Ratu Sukuna’s education contributions
After Fiji’s independence in 1970, this date was observed as a public holiday to honor his pioneering contributions to land management reform in Fiji.

The Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) extends heartfelt wishes for a commemorative and memorable Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day celebration.
Its general secretary Muniappa Goundar said Ratu Sir Josefa Lalabalavu Vanayaliyali Sukuna was a distinguished Fijian chief, scholar, soldier, and statesman, widely regarded as the precursor to Fiji’s post-independence leadership.
May 30th marks the anniversary of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna’s passing in 1958.

Theme
This year, the theme is ‘celebrating visionary leadership for Fiji through education and culture’. “The theme aptly reflects our recognition of individuals and initiatives that have significantly advanced our nation’s educational systems and cultural heritage,” Mr Goundar said.
“This celebration acknowledges efforts to provide inclusive and quality education for all, the promotion of higher learning, and the integration of technology in education.”
Furthermore, he said it highlights the preservation and promotion of Fijian cultural traditions, languages, and arts.
“We also recognise leaders who enhance Fiji’s global presence through cultural diplomacy and those who incorporate cultural education into our schools,” he said.
In the words of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna ‘the future of our people lies in education and unity’.
He urged people to appreciate and build upon the contributions of those who shape Fiji’s educational and cultural landscape.
