The National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDMO) is advising Fijians to take precautionary measures of following warnings of strong winds, heavy rain and flood warnings.

In a statement yesterday, NDMO said a gale warning was in force for the Northern Lau group indicating dangerous conditions for maritime activities.

A strong wind and heavy rain warning remained in force for coastal areas of: Southern Viti Levu (from Sigatoka through Navua to Suva and up to Rakiraki), Beqa, Vatulele, Yasawa, Kadavu, interior and Southern Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands of Cikobia, Qelelevu, Lau and Lomaiviti groups.

Members of the public are advised to ensure tree branches are cut down to prevent damages to homes and less travelling are made.

Sea travels are to be avoided as well as playing in flooded rivers and there be no attempts to cross them.

Families and communities living in flood prone areas are highly advised to move to higher grounds when necessary.

NDMO is also urging the public to ensure that elders and persons with disability are looked after and accounted for during adverse weather conditions.

NDMO is working closely with the Fiji Meteorological Services in Nadi in bringing the latest update on the weather conditions in Fiji.
