Two teachers have been looking after 70 students of Galoa Island Primary School in Vanua Levu for the past few weeks.

This after the third teacher resigned without giving any notice to the Ministry of Education.

Minister of Education Rosy Akbar confirmed the situation, and a replacement was assigned to report to school today.

Ms Akbar said the Ministry received complaints from the villagers regarding the third educator.

She said the resignation of the primary school educator was known three weeks ago although the teacher had left before that.

“There were complaints from the villagers about the teacher. Without our knowledge, the teacher abandoned his position,” she said.

She said the teacher was now deemed to have resigned.

“Unfortunately, this is the situation with the 1000 plus schools and sometimes teachers resign without notice, some do not report to duties and by the time the issue comes to the HR then we have to follow a process whereby we appoint new teachers,” Ms Akbar said.

“Mostly smaller schools have composite classes where one teacher looks after two classes because the numbers are small.”

Galoa Island headman, Simione Makosoi said complaints against the teacher were lodged because of his absenteeism and lack of focus on schoolwork.

“In one week, he would teach for three days. For the rest of the week, he would leave the school and go back to his place in Dreketi,” he said.
