Villagers in Gau are calling for stronger constitutional recognition and protection of iTaukei identity, customs and traditional rights during nationwide Constitution Review Commission (CRC) consultations.
Villagers gathered at Qarani, Gau in Lomaiviti to share their views on the 2013 Constitution.
Many expressed concerns that the supreme law did not adequately reflect the identity, culture and traditional rights of indigenous people.

Speaking during the consultation, community representative Tevita Seru said changes were needed to ensure iTaukei rights were clearly recognised and protected.
“The 2013 Constitution does not fully reflect the rights of the iTaukei and indigenous people,” Mr Seru said.
“There are many important areas where our traditional rights and identity should be better recognised.”
He said villagers wanted a constitution that protected not only land ownership, but also indigenous customs and leadership structures.
“Our culture and traditions are part of our identity,” he said.
“If these are not protected properly, future generations may lose connection to their heritage.”
Mr Seru said people living in rural communities often felt their voices were overlooked in national discussions.
“We want the Government and leaders to listen to the people in the villages,” he said.
“The constitution must represent all communities fairly, including those in the maritime islands.”
He also stressed that the call for stronger indigenous recognition was about inclusion rather than division.
“This is not about separating people,” Mr Seru said.
“It is about ensuring that indigenous rights, culture and history are respected and preserved.”
