GCC chairman urges voters to decide on Constitution changes

Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula has urged the people of Macuata to exercise their democratic right when voting in the proposed referendum on constitutional changes, saying the decision ultimately rests with the people.
Speaking at the Macuata Provincial Council meeting in Naduri yesterday, Ratu Viliame said the outcome of any constitutional change would depend on voters.
“The GCC will not tell you what to do,” he said.

“We ask our people to vote for the change in constitution if they need it to be changed.
“I urge the chiefs of districts and village to have conversations on this topic before the team responsible comes around November.”
Ratu Viliame also encouraged chiefs to embrace change and make use of the knowledge and expertise available within their communities.
“There are many sons of Macuata who have excelled in many fields of work and we should make use of them in our provincial and district meeting to share their views in their respective areas of expertise.
“GCC members are always urged to take a step forward and welcome changes that come our way. We should not be afraid of change.
“If we do not have the tools, we seek help from those who know.
“We should not fear the knowledge that they have.”
GCC pushes for wider use of iTaukei language
Ratu Viliame also highlighted the GCC’s efforts to promote the use of the iTaukei language, particularly among young people.
He said the council was advocating for the language to be made compulsory in schools.
“The GCC has proposed that the iTaukei language should be taught compulsory in schools.
“Many iTaukei students now are reading English Bibles in churches.”
He said encouraging the use of the iTaukei language at home and in schools was important for preserving culture and identity.
