Work on the Great Council of Chiefs complex in Draiba has not started because of the Occupational Health and Safety Board’s pending approval.

Minister of iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu said the tender has been advertised and a building company was awarded the contract.

He added that the i-Taukei Trust Fund Board that looks after this project, has yet to brief him on who the tender was given to.

“Right now, there is nothing that the ministry or the i-Taukei Trust Fund Board can do unless OHS conducts its preliminary investigation and approves works to begin,” Mr Vasu said.

“As you know, the contractors have already cordoned off areas where works have been planned for.”

The reconstruction of the GCC complex was planned to begin in June and expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

The Ministry of i-Taukei Affairs received an insurance claim of $6million that has been paid out for this project.

The building was destroyed in an early morning fire on December 11, 2019. It was determined and reported that a mosquito coil had caused the fire.
