A viral sexually suggestive dance video filmed during what appears to be a Fijian cultural gathering has been condemned as “disgusting and embarrassing” by the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), sparking nationwide backlash and debate over cultural respect.

GCC chair Ratu Viliame Seruvakula said the video—widely circulated on social media—undermined the dignity and values of iTaukei traditions.

“This type of conduct is not reflective of our cultural values and the respect we uphold in our communities,” Ratu Viliame said during a press conference yesterday.

Online viewers have reacted strongly, with hundreds describing the behaviour as disrespectful and shameful, especially given the traditional setting in which the dance took place.

Cultural experts warn the viral spread of such content risks distorting public perceptions of Fijian heritage and could encourage imitative behaviour among young people.

In response, the GCC is considering launching public awareness campaigns to reinforce cultural protocols and promote the protection of Fijian customs in the digital age.
