Former politician George Shiu Raj has resigned as a Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) vice-president and ended his membership.

He tendered his resignation to the party last week and became the latest SODELPA management board member to quit the party.

This was confirmed by SODELPA general secretary Lenaitasi Duru and Mr Shiu Raj yesterday.

Mr Shu Raj said the resignation was a result of consultation with his potential voters.

“I have to join another party because at the end of the day, it’s not me, but the people. What the people, say I will listen,” he said.

“If the people of Ra are telling me enough of SODELPA and join another party, I will move because I am a true son of Ra.

“In a few days I will confirm what party I will join.

“There are lot of political parties that want me, but at the end of the day I will consult the vanua

“I wish SODELPA well in the upcoming elections.”

When asked about chances of joining Sitiveni Rabuka’s party, he said only time would tell.

Mr Duru said: “We have always known that he was going to resign because he was more affiliated with Rabuka.

“We had hoped that he would stay with us, but I think he has decided to move on.

“He submitted his resignation last week; it’s something that we have to bring to the management board when we next meet.”
