Global Demand for Coconuts on the Rise

The global demand for coconuts continues to rise, driven by trends in health, beauty and sustainability, says Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu.

During the national Coconut Day celebration in Savusavu last Friday he said this opened new doors for coconut producers to expand their reach and secure lucrative market overseas.

“In doing so, we are not only boosting the economic potential for our exports but also showcasing Fiji’s commitment to environmental stewardship on the global stage,” Mr Vasu said.

However, to unlock the full potential of this industry, he said it was imperative that Fiji invested in research, innovation, and development. In 2024, Fiji exported a significant quantity of coconut products, like virgin coconut oil, copra, desiccated coconut, coconut milk, and shell-based handicrafts, contributing significantly to Fiji’s export revenue.

“It also linked Fiji to global markets, showcasing the rich bounty of our islands,” he said.

“We must embrace modern agricultural techniques, support the empowerment of smallholder farmers, and promote ethical and sustainable farming practices.

“By working together as a nation, we can ensure that the coconut industry flourishes, creating more jobs, strengthening rural communities, and contributing to our economic resilience.”

Farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs depend on the coconut industry, underscoring its vital role in nurturing local communities.

He stated that with mindful cultivation, coconuts symbolise hope for a greener future one that balances progress with environmental stewardship.

He said the coconut industry plays a pivotal role in Fiji’s national economy adding that beyond its cultural value, the coconut tree represents boundless economic potential for Fiji, offering opportunities for growth, sustainability, and innovation.

“To every farmer in rural communities, coconut symbolises resilience and growth,” he added.
