A veteran member of Fiji’s golfing community says the nation has lost a rare and irreplaceable leader in the late Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.
He described the former Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and former President as a man whose humility and genuine connection with people set him apart.
Pradeep Chandra, 54, who knew the former President for more than 20 years through their shared passion for golf, said his passing leaves a gap that will be difficult to fill.

“We won’t have that kind of person again in Fiji,” Mr Chandra said.
“He was a true gentleman — very humble and very down to earth. No matter where we met, he would always stop, talk and make you feel valued.”
Mr Chandra said his relationship with Ratu Epeli extended beyond formal encounters, recalling numerous games and personal interactions both on and off the golf course.
Their final game together was during a corporate golf tournament last year, where they played as teammates and shared meaningful conversations.
“He never made you feel small, even though he held the highest office in the country,” he said.
“He treated everyone the same, whether rich or poor, regardless of race. That is something very rare in a leader.”
Reflecting on his first meeting with Ratu Epeli during his presidency, Mr Chandra said he was immediately struck by his humility and warmth.
“The first thing I noticed was how approachable he was. From that moment, I knew he was someone special.”
Beyond his leadership roles, Mr Chandra said it was the personal moments that left the strongest impression.
He recalled light‑hearted conversations at the Fiji Golf Club and unexpected encounters in public places such as the Suva Market, where the former President would joke and engage freely with ordinary people.
“These are the moments I will cherish forever,” he said. “He had a way of making people laugh and feel comfortable. That’s what made him truly unique.”
Mr Chandra said the loss was not only personal but deeply felt across the golfing fraternity and the wider community, where Ratu Epeli was respected not just for his title, but for his character.
As the nation continues to mourn, he called on Fijians to remember the values the late leader stood for — humility, respect and unity.
“During this difficult time, I just ask everyone to pray for his family,” he said. “May his soul rest in peace, and may his family find strength and comfort.”
