Municipal councils to take over footpaths, streetlights and waterways maintenance

Municipal councils will take over responsibility for maintaining footpaths, streetlights and natural waterways within town boundaries following a Cabinet decision.

The move transfers duties from the Fiji Roads Authority and the Ministry responsible for Waterways, making municipal councils the main point of contact for residents.

Under the change, councils will lead the upkeep of these services, with Government aiming for faster response times and improved maintenance in urban areas.

The shift is expected to strengthen service delivery, streamline urban management and ensure communities receive more timely support.
