A family in Labasa is living comfortably today thanks to the generosity of some good Samaritans.

The family of eight, who are living with disabilities , now have a proper kitchen and electrical wiring fitted in their home by members of a non-government organisation – Slayers of Labasa.

The family lives at the bottom of Nararo Hill in Nagigi, Labasa.

The Slayers’ recent project was building a kitchen and installing electrical wiring in the entire house for the disabled family.

The “Good Samaritans” held a fundraising drive last year and managed to collect $2000; the cost for the project was around $1500.

Parat Kumari, 60, is partially disabled and lives with her seven disabled children who are mentally and physically challenged.

“I am so happy that now we will enjoy cooking in the newly built kitchen with some light,” Ms Kumari said.

“For years, we have been cooking in the dark outside our home. Sometimes we even get wet in the rain while trying to cook our meals.

“The assistance from the Slayers have been timely as we have no groceries or food right now. For two months now, we have only received $80 instead of the $100 from Social Welfare.”

“I am thankful that there are some young people in our society who still take care of the needy like us,” the mother of seven said.

Slayers secretary Shalveen Lal said: “The group is blessed to share the same vision in helping others and bringing smiles to the needy.”
