A new government-funded workboat will bring essential services directly to the scattered islands of Lau, eliminating the need for costly and risky trips to Suva.
Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka commissioned the MV Colata at the Royal Yacht Club in Walu Bay today, marking what he described as “a proud moment” for the Coalition Government.
The $342,000 vessel, built locally by Integrated Welding Industries, will serve as a mobile government office carrying officers from various ministries to outer islands.

“Distance must never deny opportunity,” Mr Ditoka said.
“Every Fijian, wherever they live, deserves access to essential services – health, education, economic support, and disaster relief.”
The workboat will also play a critical role during cyclone season, delivering emergency supplies and transporting assessment teams to disaster-stricken communities.
“When disaster strikes, this vessel will be a lifeline,” Mr Ditoka said.
“Imagine our disaster teams reaching a cyclone-stricken community within hours, not days – thanks to this workboat.”
Mr Ditoka said the ministry plans to acquire similar vessels for Lomaiviti and the Yasawas in future budget cycles.
“This is the first workboat the ministry has actually funded on its own,” he said.
“We’re hoping for the next budget cycle that we'll be able to get another one or two."
The vessel’s name, MV Colata, connects Tailevu province through the chiefly lineage of Nayavu and Lau through the communities it will serve.
