Government has moved to strengthen Fiji’s fuel supply security, approving contingency measures to manage potential disruptions linked to global tensions.

Cabinet has endorsed the drafting of new regulations that would allow authorities to prioritise fuel allocation for essential services and critical infrastructure if required.

The decision comes as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to create uncertainty in global energy markets and threaten international oil supply chains.

To improve coordination, Cabinet has also approved the appointment of the Permanent Secretary for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport as Fuel Controller.

A Fuel Advisory Committee, made up of key permanent secretaries, will also be established, along with a Cabinet subcommittee for energy to oversee national response efforts.

Government said the measures were precautionary and aimed at strengthening resilience in the face of possible supply disruptions and price volatility.

Fiji currently has arrangements in place for up to three months of fuel supply, with authorities continuing to monitor global developments, incoming shipments and domestic stock levels.
