Government Should Prioritise Teacher's Welfare

“We need better wages for our educators, we have been grooming these students ever since early childhood, right to their year one to year 13.”

The Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) has called on Government to prioritise teachers’ welfare.

FTA general secretary Paula Manumanunitoga said 2024 was the year where a lot of issues could be addressed.

He said among them was providing quality staff quarters for teachers, second was the seasoned workload of school work one has to endure whilst in school because of teacher shortage.

“This is a very serious problem for our country, teachers leaving our country for greener pastures, we all know as citizens of country about the standard of living here,” he said.

“We need better wages for our educators, we have been grooming these students ever since early childhood, right to their year one to year 13.”

Mr Manumanunitoga said teachers’ brain drain stories are widely evident, and this must be addressed since students are the only ones going to be impacted.

He said most of the teachers leaving the country often opt for better wages and working conditions overseas, and this creates competition for them to maintain and lessen the migration of teachers.

“It quite painful to see that these teachers are leaving our country to serve elsewhere,” he said.

“Just do better in terms of teacher’s welfare.”
