The Ministry of Policing has dismissed calls for the appointment of an expatriate Commissioner of Police, expressing confidence in the leadership of the current Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu.

In a statement, the Ministry said the Force had demonstrated significant capability under the current Commissioner's leadership.

"The Fiji Police Force has demonstrated significant capability under the current Commissioner's leadership, including the seizure of 4.1 tonnes of methamphetamine and 2.5 tonnes of cocaine, with suspects brought before the courts."

The statement said the drug seizures had prevented potentially devastating consequences for families and communities.

"Had these drugs reached Fiji's streets, the consequences would have been devastating for families and communities."

The statement also highlighted investigations involving senior public officials.

"The Commissioner has also demonstrated that no one is above the law, overseeing investigations involving individuals at the highest levels of public office where evidence warranted action."

Government said it remained committed to modernising the Force, including through the proposed Fiji Police Bill 2026.
