Minister for Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh has revealed plans to prioritise the renovation of all Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) staff quarters in Fiji.

He made this known during his trip to Labasa while reviewing the existing quarters and infrastructure upgrades at the mill.

Mr Singh said the Government was committed to improving the welfare of sugar industry employees by ensuring they have access to proper housing facilities.

He also confirmed that the matter would be raised during the upcoming FSC Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the next two weeks.

He said one of his main concerns was that many FSC staff were currently living in rented accommodation outside the mill premises due to the poor state of the existing quarters.

“The condition of the Labasa FSC quarters is very pathetic,” Mr Singh said.

“The long years of neglect have left the buildings in a deteriorated state, forcing employees to seek housing elsewhere.”

The Minister said that it was vital for staff to live close to the mill to ensure efficient operations and better morale among workers.

He also revealed that he would propose the allocation of funds in the next national budget to begin renovations not only in Labasa but also at the Rarawai and Lautoka mills.

Mr Singh said the planned investment aims to provide safe, comfortable and modern living spaces for staff, which would contribute to higher productivity and job satisfaction across the sugar industry.
