An emotional grandfather is urging Government to consider struggling welfare recipients in the upcoming National Budget as rising fuel prices continue to drive up the cost of living.
Seventy-eight-year-old George Titoko, a social welfare recipient who supports his grandchildren, said he is finding it increasingly difficult to cope as transport, food and utility costs climb.
“Please think of us. Think of me,” Mr Titoko said, appealing to authorities to increase welfare assistance.

Originally from Waitaci in Vanuabalavu, Lau, Mr Titoko lives in Levuka, Ovalau. He says the rising cost of inter-island travel has added further strain on already tight household finances.
“Boat fare from Suva to Levuka has risen from $25 to $45. This is a huge jump, likewise for food items and medical needs,” he said.
“For us who depend on inter-island travel for medical, family and essential needs, it is more difficult to afford all these.”
Mr Titoko said maritime communities rely heavily on ferry services for access to healthcare, education and basic supplies, but increasing fares were forcing many families to cut back on essential travel.
Across the country, higher global fuel prices have triggered a ripple effect, driving up bus fares, electricity costs and the price of everyday goods.
Living on a fixed welfare income while caring for two grandchildren, Mr Titoko said managing daily expenses had become a constant struggle.
“It is now difficult to manage household responsibilities on a fixed welfare payment. Those without steady employment will feel the pinch even more,” he said.
He said he hoped the Government would prioritise vulnerable groups such as the elderly and low-income households in the national budget, ensuring stronger support to help them cope with rising living costs.
