Grandma, 68, Feels Safe At Evacuation Centre

Losalini Diela was one of the 130 evacuees who felt safer to take shelter at an evacuation centre in Nadi during the height of the floods last Saturday afternoon.
The 68-year-old grandmother lives at Nawaka tramline where most of the houses in the area were affected by the flood.
The widow who lives with her son and daughter in-law left their home last Saturday afternoon to take shelter at Andrews Primary School.

She said even though the water level was still low she did not hesitate to rush to the evacuation centre.
“I couldn’t wait to come to the school. Even though the water was still low on Saturday, I just wanted to go to the evacuation centre because I felt safe there. Our area is always flooded during heavy rainfall,” Ms Diela said.
“My son and his wife went to check our house on Sunday. It was under water.”
Ms Diela thanked the school and those involved in the evacuation of flood affected families.
“We are so thankful to the school and all those involved in providing a place for shelter for us.”
School head teacher, Dharmendra Reddy said their facility always catered for affected people in the Nadi area during floods.
“This school is used as an evacuation centre. Currently, there are 130 evacuees who are here. Seven classrooms are used by them,” he said.
The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) says the current evacuation centres in Nadi are Nadi Muslim, Nadi Andrews Primary, Sangam Sadhu Kuppuswamy Memorial College (SSKMC), Votualevu Public School and other schools which can be found in their social media page.
People have been advised to contact Police on 917 and National Fire Authority NFA on 910 if they need any help in moving to safety during the current weather conditions.
