The increase consumption of ‘kava’ and addiction of gadgets has contributed to the discord of families and individuals from reality.
Head of the Catholic Church in Fiji and Rotuma, Archbishop Peter Loy Chong said the identified social ills hooked people into a life devoid of good relationship.
“We are human beings, we are social beings, we need good relationships to fill our life because we are human beings, we are relational beings,” Archbishop Chong said.

“When I go home, I see the young people all in one room glued to their gadgets which becomes a worry because children are not talking to each other. If that becomes the dominate mode of existence, it’s a big worry because human beings are not born to be by themselves.”
Archbishop Chong said this is a big wakeup call as instead of being relational, our lives have become very individualistic.
He said people can be in one room and everybody has a gadget in their hands even some married people sitting next to each other, but in their own world.
“This is a very big worry because it can change our world upside down unless we change our behaviour patterns in our families and children,” he said.
“To make it worse, parents are using gadgets to keep their children occupied.”
