When Kitione Nasau turned 17 in 1975, he was always seen helping his father on their sugarcane farm at Naviyago Village, located on the outskirts of Lautoka.

In the year 2000, his father passed away and the responsibility to manage the farm and continue from where his father had left off was passed on to Mr Nasau.

Twenty-two years later, the 64-year-old was still seen on that same sugarcane farm planting and harvesting sugarcane to rake in income for his family.

The father of four children was always assisted by his wife, 64-year-old Savaira Viaquva on the farm until she was unable to walk properly.

Mr Nasau owns about five acres of land.

Sugarcane payout

Earlier this week, a total of 11,400 growers around the country received their fourth cane payment of $15.15.

He said receiving his share of the payment was a blessing.

Upon receiving his payout yesterday, Mr Nasau immediately paid their electricity and water bills.

“It was a huge burden lifted off my shoulders,” he said.

“The cane payment money I have been receiving over the years has helped me buy food and pay our bills.”

Mr Nasau was grateful to receive a substantial amount.

He harvests about 400 tonnes of sugarcane every year.

A total of 18 sugarcane farmers are based in the Naviyago area.

Abdul Khan

Saru, Lautoka sugarcane farmer Abdul Khan, 65, said he was content receiving his sugarcane payout.

Mr Khan who owns 10 acres of land began farming when he was 22 years old.

“I received a good amount of funds and I am happy with it,” he said.

Growers Council

Sugar Cane Growers Council chief executive officer, Vimal Dutt said the council welcomed the fourth cane payment of $15.15.

“Growers are happy with the cane payment, they are in a better position to prepare for the season while the crop is also very promising with the favourable weather,” he said.

“The price paid out is as per the Master Award. While the Labasa Mill is to open first, growers are all busy preparing to harvest.

“We are optimistic and sincerely grateful
