Waiqele Primary School headgirl, Gurneet Kaur, has fulfilled her promise to her parents by becoming the dux of Year Eight.

Gurneet scored the highest marks in both the annual examination and the Fiji Eighth Year Examination (FEYE) at her school in Labasa.

Originally from Kawakawa Settlement, the youngest of three siblings, Gurneet scored 526 marks out of 600 in the FEYE.

"I studied day and late into the night, including weekends because my aim is to become the first doctor in my family," Gurneet said.

"To achieve this, I have always come first in my class since Year One."

The 13-year-old's eldest sister is a teacher, and her brother is pursuing an engineering course.

She wants to become a doctor after witnessing how people in her settlement travel long distances to seek medical attention at the Labasa Hospital or Nasea Health Centre.

"I want to help my people by providing immediate medical care when needed and alleviate the fear of early death or losing body parts due to diabetes,'' she said.

"I thank my parents and teachers for helping me achieve my goals."

Gurneet is proud of her rural roots and aims to set an example for others, showing that no matter which school they attend, they can excel in education and make a difference in their communities.
