Mr Radrodro said Fiji had proven itself to be a steadfast ally of the U.S, even when it meant standing alone on key international issues.

Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) leader Aseri Radrodro is calling on the Government to discuss the possibility of a temporary halt to high-risk deportations until Fiji strengthens its law enforcement and rehabilitation systems.

He made the statement following United States President Donald Trump’s executive order that could see the mass deportation of illegal immigrants living in the U.S.

More than 300 Fijians have been documented by the United States’ Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) to face deportation in the coming six months.

The priority would first fall on illegal immigrants who have been convicted of committing criminal activities in the U.S.

“Fiji acknowledges that some of its citizens in the U.S have criminal records, particularly in drug trafficking, human trafficking, and gang-related offences, as reported by various media sources,” Mr Radrodro said.

“Fiji must prepare its communities, security forces and institutions to reintegrate these individuals without allowing them to introduce criminal practices into an already fragile security landscape,” he said.

“The U.S has a moral responsibility to assist Fiji in managing this challenge.

“If Fiji is to maintain its strategic position in the Pacific without becoming a hub for transnational crime, the U.S must support our national security efforts.”

Mr Radrodro suggested that there first be comprehensive risk assessments and pre-deportation rehabilitation programmes before any deportation occurs.

“Regional coordination through the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) to address deportation as a broader regional security issue.

“We also need international assistance through the International Democrat Union (IDU), of which SODELPA is a member, to present Fiji’s case on the global stage.”

Call for Immediate Action

Mr Radrodro said Fiji had proven itself to be a steadfast ally of the U.S, even when it meant standing alone on key international issues.

“Now, it is time for the U.S to recognise Fiji’s contributions and reciprocate through diplomatic goodwill,” he said.

“SODELPA stands firm in defending the safety and economic well-being of Fiji and its people, the Fijian Government must act swiftly and strategically to protect our caregivers, secure economic stability, and prevent our nation from becoming a dumping ground for transnational criminals.”
